5 Ways To Increase Website Traffic For Free

Blue Cheese Digital > Blog Standard > Business > 5 Ways To Increase Website Traffic For Free

Increasing your website traffic is the number one way to gain more exposure and leads for your brand. There are several FREE ways to increase your website traffic (our blog will explain), but before we continue we have to share this with you…

We find many of our clients are really keen to get a website up for their business (which is great), but they don’t follow-up from there, or do anything with their site. By this we mean: driving people to their website through social media or any form of marketing, publishing new content through a blog; or update/refresh any of the sites content after time has passed.

Just because you have a website up and running, it doesn’t automatically mean you’re going to receive traffic instantly.

Think of your business or brand as a fish in the middle of the sea. You’re competing with lots and lots of other fish for food (clients). You need to find ways of gaining that competitive advantage.

Read on to learn about five ways you can increase your website traffic for FREE!

1. Use the Skyscraper Technique

Content is the number one component for any website (and the reason we visit the websites that we do – whether it be for information or about a product/service). So how can you stand out from your competitors? A great start is to use the ‘skyscraper technique’.

So what is the ‘skyscraper technique’?

The Skyscraper Technique is a link building tactic that was devised by Brian Dean of Backlinko as a way to create engaging content that will help you to earn quality editorial links. This technique helped gain their website 110% more traffic in just 14 days.

The skyscraper technique comes in 3 steps:

  1. Finding link-worthy content – Find content that is the most useful. What we mean by that, is something that you will actually go and do right now. Or by adding something onto your website straight after reading it.
  2. Make something even better – Once you have the content that you feel is useful, it’s time to make it even better. Most of the time, you need to make the content (perhaps a blog article) longer, or expand on the topic by going into more depth. For example, if the article you found was “10 ways to grow vegetables in the garden”, why not think about writing “15 or 20 ways to grow vegetables in the garden.” There are also other ways to make an article even better. This could be through the design or enclosing more up-to-date information and facts. We will expand on this in another blog in the coming weeks!
  3. Reach out to the right people – So you’ve created your new article; it’s now the best it can be. It’s time to reach out to the right people. You can do this by going to the website that you found your previous article on. Find some contact details and get in touch with them, explaining that you’ve written a new article that is more thorough and up to date. It may feel a bit like cold calling, but if you find other websites writing content similar to you, they could potentially link back to your website.

By using the skyscraper technique, you will find that more websites will link to you. All it takes is one website to link to your article and more will join. The skyscraper technique is a great way of link building and improving your content marketing, with the added benefit of being free.

2. Get Listed On Google My Business

If you want to gain more website traffic, you need to get listed on Google My Business. Google My Business is a free tool that allows you to promote your Business Profile and business website on Google Search and Maps, and allows you to have control over how your brand is viewed.

Having a Google My Business page setup will allow you to be found by customers that are more local to you, which in practice should mean that you will receive more website traffic; as more people can find you if they’re searching for specific interests!

3. Host A Giveaway Contest

You might be thinking, how is giving away free stuff going to help my business out? Well, hosting a giveaway contest on your website will generate website traffic. When it comes to free products, people are willing to do many things to get them, including sharing information about your business with their friends, family and followers (an increased audience!).

Here are a couple of ways you can increase your website traffic through a giveaway contest:

  • Social Sharing – Social sharing is a great way to gain more website traffic through a free giveaway. The more people that share your content on social media, the more people will see it, which results in more brand exposure and more people potentially visiting your website.
  • Grow Mailing Lists – Include an email sign up on any free contest that you setup. If you capture more email addresses, you can use them in follow-up email marketing campaigns!

4. Community Building

Building a community of people who love your brand is a great way to drive traffic to your website. Over the past few years, Facebook groups have demonstrated a great way of doing this; so why not jump on the bandwagon! Don’t forget there are other spaces too, such as Twitter (be prepared to dedicate a lot of time to managing this channel though), LinkedIn Groups and Quora Space. Quora Space is a great place, creating value by answering community questions (and becoming an industry leader) and linking back to your website.

By creating groups on Facebook, LinkedIn and Quora, you will keep in the mind of your customers. We highly recommend starting a Facebook group due to the recent algorithm changes. Don’t forget these groups are also a great way to engage with your customers, allowing you to learn more bout them and what they would like to see from you; helping you develop more products or services.

5. Use Push Notifications

Over the past year push notifications have become more prominent on websites. They are a great way to engage with potential customers. The great characteristic of push notifications is that you don’t even need an app. You can run them straight from your website through a plugin or adding code.

So what are push notifications? Push notifications are messages that come from a website. The end-user can receive them on their desktop or mobile even when the webpage is not open in their browser. From a user perspective, they are also more accepted as they don’t need to give any contact information away, such as an email address, like you would with signups. All they have to do is click ‘accept’ through their browser, whilst visiting your website.

Here are some of the advantages to push notifications:

  • No need for a mobile app – As we have explained in the previous paragraph, there isn’t any need for a mobile app. Push notifications work just like a native mobile app, so there isn’t any additional cost.
  • Increase conversions – You can trigger purchases by sending your users informative messages such as special discounts or limited time offers.
  • Targeting the correct users – As users will have approved the use of push notifications from your website, they’ve already engaged with your brand and identified themsleves as having an interest. You can focus on engaging with customers who have alread bought in (to some extent) rather than trying too find a new customer stream.
  • Reduced customer journey – Push notifications mean you can send users deep links straight to a specific item or promotion; making their journey faster and more efficient.

More website traffic = more customers

By using some of these website traffic techniques, you should hope to see an increase in traffic to your website. Be committed to these processes and learn which avenues work best for you. Your customers are king and the more traffic you create, the more likely you are to increase customers.

A good strategy is about layering short-term and long-term ideas together so they work in tandem. Once you’ve felt you’ve accomplished one of them, try and work out how you can do it better!
